4 Heart Book Review & Huge Giveaway: Connecting Strangers by Rachel Carrington

Connecting Strangers
Discovering Emily Series
Book 1
Rachel Carrington

Genre: Romantic Suspense
Cover Artist: Elaina Lee of For the Muse Designs

Book Description:

Getting close is dangerous…

He’s too close, and I start to fidget, needing to keep my hands busy so they won’t grab hold of his shirt. Because that’s what they want to do. Draw him closer. So I can Inhale his scent. Taste his skin.

I didn’t run because I was in an abusive relationship; I ran because my soul was being crushed. I’d forgotten how to live, how to be happy. Running out of gas in a small town, I catch the eye of the local sheriff when the very last thing I want is to come under the scrutiny of the police. I left my boyfriend with blood on my hands, and I know as soon as the wound heals he’ll come looking for me.

Adam Madison draws me to him so easily I can’t even pretend to fight. And the closer we get, the more combustible we become.  I’ve never experienced such passion or power. My need is as great as his, but I’m sure he’ll walk away from me once he knows my secret. No other man would stay.

I’ve had enough complications in my life. I’m not looking for more, and that’s exactly what Adam is—a sexy, magnetic complication with secrets of his own. And with my ex on the hunt, I can’t risk bringing him down with me. But he won’t leave…even when vengeance could kill us both.

Our Review:

This one hits all the right notes – (very) hunky guy, damsel in distress, fast and faithful fiends, and bad bad men who need their comeuppance.
Escaping from a world of hurt, heroine Emily is fleeing for her life, and who should she run into but the most gorgeous guy in six states (okay, that’s my opinion), Adam.
In Connecting Strangers (book one of the Discovering Emily series), Rachel Carrington takes us on a spirited, well-written ride through rural Kentucky, and then leaves us with a wonderful “good enough for now” ending, with its very toes on the precipice of a cliffhanger.
Well done.

About the Author:

I started writing years ago, and my first attempt was a contemporary romance that will never see the light of day. I think I may even have thrown it away by now. It was absolutely horrific as I knew nothing about well…anything to do with writing.
After that, I started writing fantasy romances about wizards and wizards, and once those took off, I segued to paranormal romances (hello, vampires and ghosts) and romantic suspense.

I also write articles for various magazines, including The Writer’s Journal, Writer’s Magazine, Writer’s Weekly, Writing for Dollars, Absolute Write, Freelance Writing.com, and Funds for Writers.

I’m fortunate to make my home in historical Charleston, South Carolina. Beautiful city. Beautiful people. When I’m not writing, I love to read, watch Bones, Castle, Blue Bloods, and Hawaii Five-O, create videos, keep Target in business, play visitor in my city, and drink lots of coffee.

Month in Review by More Romance Please

The Month in Review
More Romance Please

The following are MRP's 4-5 heart reviews given during the month. We hope you enjoy!

Our Five Heart Reviews

In This LifeMesmerizing. This is a tour de force by Terri Herman-Ponce. At times bewildering, alarming, and thrilling, In This Life never disappoints.
Psychiatrist Lottie Morgan is having some serious memory issues, and the people in her life not only aren’t helping, they may be making the situation worse. Especially her boyfriend, ex-military hunk, David. Pragmatic and an “I’ll believe it when I see it” kind of guy, he shows extraordinary patience with her, but that has its limits. And, in the spirit of adding insult to injury, she may have a stalker. What is going on?
Even as Lottie’s woes and confusion pile up, the reader glides happily along, enjoying the lyric writing, the otherworldly quality of  her ‘memories’, and the evocative recounting of another life and love.  Wonderful. Very well done. @terriponce

CovetHoly Cow! Terri Herman-Ponce has done it again. I loved In This Life so much, I ran to my Kindle after writing the review and bough Covet. Not disappointed! The story is equally fast-paced, bewildering, alarming, and thrilling. I’m guessing book three in the Past Life series is on the way, and I can hardly wait.
This time, hunky paramilitary yummy guy, David is the one getting “memories” he can’t understand and doesn’t want to deal with. The love of his life, psychiatrist Lottie Morgan is having a hard time coping with David’s refusal to admit what is going on. And then in walks a whole slew of nasty people ready and wanting to gum up the works.
POV changes from chapter to chapter, and I love being inside David’s head in this book. Terri knows how to write a very convincing Alpha male, and she does one heck of a job on High Bitch women, as well. Love MD!
I highly recommend this book, this series, and probably anything Terri Herman-Ponce writes. Very well done. @terriponce

SidekickPure Delight! Socialite-Without-A-Care Bremy St. James doesn’t clutter up her life with anything  more trying than assessing the latest fashion or nightclub trends, until reality smacks her upside the head and she must leave that life behind – which is where the reader comes in. After a month on her own, she’s forced to admit her survival skills suck, and fate is allied against her. Then her life goes from harsh, to out-and-out bizarre. By turns funny, sweet, diabolical, and eye-popping, with a fare dose of evil sprinkled over all, the ride Auralee Wallace takes us on reads like a superhero storybook that straddles the line between fantasy and (sort of) reality. Happily, it will have you cheering and laughing all along the way. I can hardly wait for the sequel. Wait, there will be one….right? Fingers crossed.
Very well done. @AuraleeWallace

Mostly MagicDonna June Cooper has done it again. More than Magic captured my heart and my imagination when I reviewed a few months ago, and now the second in the Books of the Kindling series, Mostly Magic, meets the very high bar this author sets for herself. O, how I would love to find this very special mountain and spend time with the folks who know it best.
This story picks up with sibling #2, Dr. Daniel Woodruff, only months after the close of MtM. We find ourselves in Italy, which is never a bad thing, but terrifying visions are unrelenting, and Daniel must risk his reputation, and perhaps his life, in order to ensure the safety of those around him.
Mel Noblett is an environmental reporter who senses there is more to Daniel’s bizarre behavior than a personality quirk, and together they must find out why he is having these visions, and what, if anything, they can do to alter their outcome.
Once again, the story captivates with lyric beauty, humor, tension, mystery and love – of family, of friendship, of life, and of the environment. And may I say ~ Long Live the Bees!
Very well done.   @donnajunecooper

Our Four Heart Reviews

Connecting Strangers: This one hits all the right notes – (very) hunky guy, damsel in distress, fast and faithful fiends, and bad bad men who need their comeuppance.
Well done.  @rcarrington2004

Savannah SacrificeMs. Winters’ breathtaking Nymph series continues in beautiful Savannah. Unfortunately for teenage heroine Starling, enjoying Savannah’s beauty is not what brought her there. Her mother has been murdered, and spirit voices she can’t get rid of threaten her own life if she doesn’t do their bidding. Jasper, the bodyguard she’s been trying to ditch, is close on her heels, and together they must find their way to an understanding, in order to fulfill their destiny.
Danger threatens at every turn, and the reader is taken on a fast-paced ride through a world chock full of evil shape-shifters (of the feathered variety), nymphs, a seer and a Voodoo priestess, and thankfully, one very understanding cabby. I enjoyed the ride.
Well done.  @danicawinters

Syphon's SongNicely written, this story is a fun adventure through the hierarchy and mystery of the Mage world. The Casteels and the Rallises face off like the Hatfields and McCoys, with magic and spells flying pell-mell, rather than bullets, but it’s quiet, brow-beat yet determined Bronte Casteel that brings them all to heal and makes both families, and the world, pay attention. I enjoyed this read and appreciate the extensive and solid world-building that Anise Rae’s imagination has brought forth.
Well done.  @AniseRae

Series Spotlight: Red Dirt Road & Lotus Blossom Lane by Annie Rose Welch

Red Dirt Road
Saving Angels Series
Book 2
Annie Rose Welch

Genre: Romance

About the Book:
The Saving Angels Series continues…

A new cast is introduced, while journeys already taken start to merge with the present, leading you down the old Red Dirt Road.

Death has always seemed just one step behind Layla Hill, taking almost everyone she’s ever loved. After she loses the love of her life, Layla vows to never love again—how could she, when she’s a death magnet?
Trying to outrun fate traveling with her uncle Willie and his band, Layla meets Michael Roberts, a beautiful Irish boxer as gentle on the piano as he is brutal in the ring. He proves as relentless in life, fighting for a place in her world even as she pushes him away, trying to protect him from her killer tendencies.
But neither foresees the sinister presence waiting for Layla at the end of the Red Dirt Road.

Excerpt
I walked to the back of the stage and moved the curtains. MoJoe was there waiting for me and handed me the sheet music. And entering the stage from the dim light of the bar was the mate who had come to accompany me on the piano. I stood, dazed for a moment, staring at him.
He wore a black fedora hat with his deep-brown, almost black hair sticking out from its edges. His scruffy facial hair thinly framed his face with deep-red whiskers. He wore a loose-fitting, black-and-white flannel shirt with worn-down jeans. I could tell from the outline of his shirt that his muscles were well filled out. He wasn’t large, but he wasn’t lanky, either. And the closer he moved toward me, the better I could make out the features of his face.
His eyes, bright blue, the color of the ocean, were large and expressive, and they seemed a little worn down, like maybe he had seen a million battles and was keeping them locked somewhere deep inside. His nose was straight but wide. His face was perfectly designed, cut to pure perfection, like I imagined the rest of him to be, his strong cheekbones shadowing and increasing the intense curve of his jawline.
And there was something else—I strained to see, even though he was moving closer—a long, thin scar stretched across his face. But even so, he was beautiful. There was no other way of putting it. And that might even have been putting it lightly. He had the face of an angel with a renegade’s body.

Something inside of me started to burn.

Lotus Blossom Lane
Saving Angels Series
Book 3
Annie Rose Welch

Genre:  Romance

About the Book:

Life after Yuma was blissful for Layla and Michael.  After the turmoil of the old Red Dirt Road, their journey seemed to be moving them in the right direction, leading them to Ireland, Michael’s birthplace, where history runs deep and secrets run even deeper.  As the road to happily-ever-after leads them down Lotus Blossom Lane, years of entombed history starts to emerge, changing the course of their lives forever.  And the person waiting for them at the end of Lotus Blossom Lane, one of the biggest starts in the world, will bring them to the Crossroads of the Saving Angels Series.

Excerpt

“Can you believe this?” I closed my eyes, and the tiny specks felt like confetti falling delicately on my face.
He turned my face toward his. “Look into my eyes, Mrs. Roberts,” he whispered. “There’s nothing on this earth more gorgeous than you, in this moment. I refuse to take my eyes away from you.” He continued to search my eyes, just as if he was seeing me for the first time. “From this moment on, you’ll never be alone. Never, for as long as we fly together, will I ever let you fall.” He rested his forehead against mine.
“I love you,” I breathed onto his lips as the snow continued to fall around us, turning the earth bright white in the pitch-black darkness.

About the Author:
Born and raised in New Orleans, Annie has a habit of shortening her words and telling long stories. She speaks with a southern flair and cooks with it too. At the tender age of twenty- one, she hitched up her wagons (took her first plane ride) and moved out west to the big shake (California). Her writing career began one sleepless night when she imagined a gorgeous woman and a man with maniacal hair floating above her like lightening bugs falling from the sky. Curious about them, their story, and why they were floating around in her head, she sat down and penned (typed) her first novel, Marigny Street. A dream come true for her, she hasn't stopped writing since. She loves a damn good love story, always has, no matter what the genre. She is particularly moved by imperfect love that in its own unique way is perfect, the notion of love at first sight, soul mates, and things that are generally out of the norm.

When she's not writing she enjoys dabbling in photography and finding new, inspirational music to add to her collection. She currently (still) resides in the big shake (although her southern roots are calling her home) with her husband, daughter, and their two peculiar dogs, Boudreaux and Tabasco (who, call her crazy, bark with an accent).

Author Interview: Ash to Steele by Karen-Anne Stewart

Ash to Steele
Karen-Anne Stewart

Genre: New Adult Romance
Number of pages: 342

 Amazon

Book Description:

Emma

Who I am and all I believe is marred with just one glance into angry, steel blue eyes. He seems to control my air, my ability to breathe. He makes me crave everything I know is a sin. Pure becomes tainted and lines are blurred. It's my fault; I'm the one who isn't strong enough. I've been damaged...broken. Breck's words haunt me...'There's a consequence for every choice you make.'

Breck

I've had so many women I can't even remember over half of their names, but none of them are mine; I make damn sure of that. I take what I desire and never look back. I don't need or want anyone, ever...not until I met Emma. Those eyes bore into what's left of my soul and her touch sears me, weakens me. I want to hate her for that. She is my ruin...my sweetest hell.

Disclaimer: Intended for readers 18+ due to strong language, mature scenes, and some violence.

MRP would like to extend a very warm welcome to Karen-Anne Stewart, author of Ash to Steele. Karen-Anne, to begin, can you tell us where you're from, and where/whom did your love for writing come from?
1.     I’ve always loved to read.  My parents read to me before I knew how to, so that was a huge inspiration in itself.  It was in college that I was inspired to become an author when I was assigned to write a short story.  I fell in love the minute I started writing.

If you were to be left alone on an island, what three books would you take with you?
This is such a tough question! If I can’t cheat and take my Kindle after making it solar powered and pre-loaded with every book I can think of, I would take Great Expectations, Shakespeare’s Complete works, and Beautiful Disaster.

What are your most and least favorite movie genres?
My favorite movies genres are romance, suspense, and comedy.  My least favorite type of movie would be horror.

If you could choose any man for your next book cover, who would he be?
Chris Hemsworth.  He would be the perfect Gavin for my upcoming novel featuring the sexy, badass bouncer from Ash to Steele.

When you are on a deadline, what aspect of your ‘regular’ life suffers most?
My sanity!  I try to be very organized so I can keep my life as a mom, wife, day job worker, and author running smoothly, but that’s easier said than done.  Like everyone these days, we juggle many things at once.  My free time is what suffers the most and I do miss when I can’t sit down and just read, but it’s all worth it!  I’m loving this wild ride J.

What advice would you give aspiring authors?
Never give up!  There will be times when you feel like you don’t know what in the hell you are doing and you will want to sit down and cry…do it, but, then, get back up and keep going.  The amazing times are so worth having to go through the frustrating ones!  The writing community is extremely supportive, so don’t be afraid to ask questions.

What advice would you give seasoned writers?
Please, keep helping new authors.  Your help meant more to me than I could ever express.  I’ve fallen in love with writing and have been extremely impressed with all the authors out there who are willing to help each other.

When reading for pleasure, do you prefer a physical or electronic book?
I love all forms of books, but I tend to reach for my Kindle first because there are so many books already loaded and ready to go.

From the first stroke of a pen (or laptop), how long did it take you get published?
With my debut novel, Saving Rain, it took about 5 months to get published, but a few more weeks before it went live.  I’m an Indie self-published author.

Did you ever feel like calling it quits?
I’ve felt overwhelmed at times but I’ve never wanted to stop writing.  Now that I’ve started, I can’t see myself not writing.

Thank you so much for joining us today, Karen-Anne. We really enjoyed the visit. Good luck and great sales with Ash to Steele.

Series Spotlight: Splendor by Janet Nissenson

Splendor
Inevitable, #2
Janet Nissenson

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Bookbaby
Publication Date: June 17, 2014
Print Length:  475 pages

About the Book:
British hotelier Ian Gregson had it all – wealth, good looks, power, and a share in his family’s worldwide, multi-billion dollar luxury hotel chain. His very name was synonymous with sophistication and elegance, and any woman he wanted could be his with just a look. But the only woman he truly desired was strictly forbidden to him for too many reasons to count.
Tessa Lockwood was young, beautiful, and lonely, despite the fact that she was a married woman. Her life had not been an easy one, and the extravagant world she caught glimpses of as an employee of the Gregson Hotel Group was far beyond anything she could ever dream of.  She could no more imagine herself ensconced in that sort of luxurious lifestyle than she could attracting the attention of her handsome, debonair boss.
Ian and Tessa secretly long for each other from afar, never daring to reveal their forbidden attraction to the other, until circumstances bring them together in a very unexpected way. And from that point on, nothing will stand in Ian’s way to finally make her his.
AUTHOR’S NOTE – despite what you might be thinking at this point, there is NO cheating in this story – just an incredibly romantic hero who will make you swoon with the way in which he sweeps the heroine off her feet!

Book Spotlight,Excerpt & Giveaway: Dangerous Reflections by Shay West

Dangerous Reflections
Adventures of Alexis Davenport Series
Book One
Shay West

Genre:  Young Adult/Teen Fantasy
Publisher:  Booktrope
Cover Artist:  Shari Ryan

Book Description:
Alexis Davenport wants to go home. She hates her new school, her mother for moving her away from her friends, and her father for walking out.

To make matters worse, Alex is haunted by images of strange girls reflected in her mirror. It’s bad enough juggling homework, a relentless bully, boys, and a deadbeat dad; now, she must save the world from an evil presence hell-bent on changing the past – and our futures. Who knew her A+ in history was going to be this important?

Excerpt:
Alex finished quickly and hurried to wash her hands. She gazed at her reflection in the mirror. A blue scrunchy encircled her brownish-blond hair. Small tendrils had come free and framed her square face. Her hazel eyes were bloodshot. She had foregone make-up that morning and her face looked pale. Her father had always teased her about her plain features as well as her lack of a womanly figure.
When Alex would retreat to her room in tears after yet another of Gary’s remarks about her looks, her mother would smooth her hair and say that her father had been kidding, that he really didn’t mean anything by the teasing. She would promise to talk to him and try to get him to stop.
Alex closed her eyes, hating that her mind was dredging up these awful memories.
She finished washing her hands and looked back up at her reflection. Suddenly, the image in the mirror shifted. Alex was no longer looking at her own face.
The strange girl had dark hair in disarray around a very dirty face. Instead of hazel eyes, the girl in the mirror had bright blue eyes and they were as wide as they could possibly go.
The reflection looked strange. It wavered and moved. Like water.
Alex jumped as the door to the restroom opened. A little old lady entered and gave her a suspicious side-ways glance. Alex turned back to the mirror and found her own face in the reflection, her eyes wide and her face as white as a sheet.
I did not just see that other face in the mirror.

Trailer:

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Victoria Pinder grew up in Irish Catholic Boston before moving to the Miami sun. She’s worked in engineering, after passing many tests proving how easy Math came to her. Then hating her life at the age of twenty four, she decided to go to law school. Four years later, after passing the bar and practicing very little, she realized that she hates the practice of law. She refused to one day turn 50 and realize she had nothing but her career and hours at a desk. After realizing she needed change, she became a high school teacher. Teaching is rewarding, but writing is a passion.

During all this time, she always wrote stories to entertain herself or calm down. Her parents are practical minded people demanding a job, and Victoria spent too many years living other people’s dreams, but when she sat down to see what skill she had that matched what she enjoyed doing, writing became so obvious. The middle school year book when someone wrote in it that one day she’d be a writer made sense when she turned thirty.

Besides her full time job of teaching, in 2013 and 2014, she sold on her own sold books to three different publishers. The Zoastra Affair, Chaperoning Paris, Borrowing the Doctor, and Electing Love will be published from Soul mate Publishing. Mything the Throne will be published with Double Dragon Ebooks. Favorite Coffee, Favorite Crush will be published with Jupiter Press.

Now she is represented by Dawn Dowdle of Blue Ridge Literary Agency and she hopes to continue selling her novels that she writes. Moving up to the next level from hard work and determination is rewarding, and partnerships bring new opportunities.

Also she’s the Vice President of Programs for the Florida Romance Writers. She’s gone to multiple conferences and intends to continue. She learns and meets so many people at conferences. Her website is www.victoriapinder.com, and she’ll continue to grow my web presence. She is working hard on other projects and found the time to plan her wedding this year.

Before writing, her father had taken her to many star trek conventions and on her own she grew up as the only girl in the 90s at the comic book store. Science Fiction was her first love, but contemporary romance was her second. She’s sticking with contemporaries for the near future.

Member of Florida Romance Writers, Contemporary Romance, Fantasy, Futuristic and Paranormal chapter of RWA, Celtic Hearts and Savvy Authors.
