Spotlight and Review: A Swan's Sweet Song by J. Arlene Culinar

A Swan's Sweet Song
J. Arlene Culinar

  • Genre: Contemporary Romance
  • Publisher: The Wild Rose Press, Inc.
  • Publication Date: January 23, 2015
Length: 210 pages

About the Book:
The instant Sherry and Carston meet, there’s desire and fascination in the air…but they’re complete opposites. Smart-talking Sherry fought her way up from poverty to stardom as a country music singer. Now, she’s ever in the limelight, ever surrounded by clamoring fans, male admirers, and paparazzi, and her spangled cowboy boots carry her all across the country, from one brightly lit stage to the next. A renowned but reclusive playwright, Carston cherishes his freedom, the silence of his home in the woods, and his solitary country walks. Any long-term commitment is obviously out of the question: how about a quick and passionate fling? But when their names are linked in the scandal press, Sherry’s plans to become an actress are revealed. Is their budding relationship doomed?

Amazon

Our Review:

A Song’s Sweet Song is a well written story that revolves around the trappings and solitude of lives lived in the spotlight. Use or be used, either way, you become a commodity and real relationships are hard, if not impossible.
Sherry Valentine is a glamorous Country singer with an established career in the spotlight, but she wants more; she wants to get into acting. Carston Hewlett is a well-known playwright who shies away from people in general, and suspects any who approach only want to use his celebrity to further their career. What will happen when a mutual attraction threatens to derail plans, assumptions, and a possible future together?
Both the writing and the story are light, funny at times, touching, and kept me turning the pages. A good indicator is when I get to the end of a story and wish I could spend just a little more time with the characters… and I did.

Well done.

Coming March 27:

Felicity's Power
J. Arlene Culinar

  • Length: 173 pages
  • Publisher: The Wild Rose Press, Inc
  • March 27, 2015

About the Book:
San Francisco, 1971: hippies in the streets, music and revolution in the air. The evening Marek Sumner opened his door to the wild-looking Felicity Powers, he knew nothing would ever be the same again. But even love and passion couldn’t keep them together.

Forty-three years later, having lived in the world’s most dangerous places as a foreign aid worker, Felicity is back, still offering him love, passion, and adventure. But why would Marek risk having his heart broken a second time? Now a well-known author, he loves his calm, solitary life in an isolated farmhouse. He and Felicity are just too different; their relationship could never work.

But Felicity is just as fascinating and joyful as ever, and that wonderful sexy magic is still there too. As for love, perhaps it’s even deeper and more delightful the second time around.

About the Author:

J. Arlene Culiner, born in New York, raised in Toronto, has spent most of her life in England, Germany, Holland, Turkey, France, Greece, Hungary and the Sahara. She now resides in a 300-year-old former inn in a French village of no real interest. Much to everyone's dismay, she protects all living creatures--especially spiders--and her wild (or wildlife) garden is a classified butterfly and bird reserve.
She is the author of three other published books: a romance, Felicity's Power (Power of Love Publishing, 2001) a history/essay, Finding Home (Sumach Press, 2004) a mystery, Slanderous Tongue (Sumach Press, 2007).

Spotlight, Interview, Excerpt & Review: Forgotten Fragrance by Téa Cooper

Forgotten Fragrance
From the Ocean to the Outback
Book 1
Téa Cooper

Publication Date: February, 2015
Publisher: Harlequin Escape

About the Book:

Only one woman can confirm his innocence, and release him from the torments of his past.

Determined to throw off the shackles of her convict past, Charlotte Oliver accepts her employer’s marriage proposal, even though she does not love him, and together they board a refitted whaling schooner bound for Sydney to begin their new life.

But life has a way of disrupting plans, and during the voyage the Zephyrus undergoes a mutiny. Captain Christian Charity loses his ship, but he also risks losing so much more. Charlotte has, in her possession, a tiny blue bottle and an Angel coin. On their own, they mean nothing more than a keepsake, but to Christian, they could mean everything – a past remade and a future with love.

Excerpt:
Craning her head back Charlotte peered up at the imposing figure standing amidships, arms akimbo, studying their little boat as it bumped alongside the immaculate black hull. A rope snaked down and the young sailor caught it and, as Marcus predicted, a ladder was lowered.
The sailor offered his hand, steadying her while she took a firm grasp on the lower rungs, then averted his eyes as she began her ascent. Before she had time to worry about her modesty a huge pair of roughened hands reached out and reefed her unceremoniously over the rail. She landed on the deck with a thump. Rearranging her skirts she nodded her thanks and moved aside to make way for Marcus.
His head appeared level with the deck rail and they hauled him aboard in a torrent of snorts and grumbles. He smoothed his topcoat, shrugged and eyed the forbidding giant who had watched the entire proceedings with a studied indifference.
‘Captain Charity, I presume.’ Marcus offered his hand and with a degree of reluctance the man unfolded his immense hairless forearms, exposed by the rolled-up sleeves of his shirt.
Charlotte bit back the laugh building in her throat. The man looked more like a pirate with his large glittering earring and red neckerchief than the captain of this neat little craft.
‘Nah! Henk, First Mate, Capt'n's gone ashore. Business to conduct.’ The corpulent pirate withdrew his hand and wiped it down his stained trousers, then resumed his belligerent stance.
Marcus’ Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed his intimidation and pulled his shoulders back. ‘Marcus Wainwright. I've arranged passage to Sydney aboard the Zephyrus.’
‘Don't hold with no passengers, meself. Zephyrus is a working ship, whaler not a bloody transporter.’ The pirate’s flat green eyes raked her. ‘And not a bleedin’ hen frigate.’

Interview:
MRP would like to extend a very warm welcome to Téa Cooper, author of Forgotten FragranceTéa, who or what most influenced you to become a writer?
I’ve always wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember. My first publicized effort was rewarded with a wallop. No one appreciated my crayoned hieroglyphics on the bedroom wall. Then there was the rather dubious story at boarding school about the school-gardener. I have to say it was a combined effort and saw most of us expelled from the school. When I left school I was determined to be a journalist. I scored a job as a cadet reporter. It lasted about twelve months until a massive number of newspapers went down the drain.
I headed off for University then and also had a job working as an editorial assistant on a magazine called Frontier and writing reviews. Sadly it wasn’t very viable financially and I ended up teaching. I’ve always kept a journal so I didn’t completely give up writing.
Then one very rainy Easter, I came across a competition run by Mills and Boon in a women’s magazine. I wrote a story called Arctic Ambience (Shudder! My only excuse is it was around the time Fabio was gracing covers). First prize was a publication contract and second a bottle of perfume. Yep! I won the perfume!
I did however move “write a book” a bit further up my bucket list. It wasn’t until 2011 that I decided it was time to have another go. My first book was published in 2012.

So who or what influenced me … I think it is in my genes, although where or who I inherited it from I have no idea.

What advice would you give aspiring authors?
Be patient and never give up! (See above.)

From the first stroke of a pen (or laptop), how long did it take you get published?
I’m probably not prepared to divulge that! (See above.)

Did you ever feel like calling it quits?
I never called it quits, and for that I will be eternally grateful.

Thank you so much for joining us today, Téa. Good luck and great sales with Forgotten Fragrance

Review:
Forgotten Fragrance gives the reader a whiff of something delightful. It takes us on a voyage to Australia’s “wild west” days, and the situations and events that formed that nation.
A convicted criminal, Charlotte Oliver has few options to look forward to, so when she’s offered marriage she agrees with thanksgiving, never mind that her intended is about as appealing as a mud hen. What she cannot anticipate is that her life, and the lives of all those on board, will change forever when the engaged couple boards the Zephyrus, with the dashing but troubled Captain Charity at the helm.
The characters are distinct and many-faceted, the writing strong and compelling. I enjoyed this sojourn south of the equator, and recommend it.
Well done

Spotlight and 5 Heart Review: Of Alliance and Rebellion by Micah Persell

  • Of Alliance and Rebellion
  • Operation: Middle of the Garden Series
  • Book 4
  • Micah Persell

  • Release Date: January 12, 2015
  • Publisher: Crimson Romance
  • Print Length: 213 pages

About the Book:
A loyal soldier of the Garden of Eden, Anahita is faced with a daunting mission: to slay the three imprisoned immortals who ate from the Tree of Eternal Life. But her Temptation is among these immortals, and once she lays eyes on him, her spirit wars with the Compulsion to both kill and protect him.

After close to nine years of imprisonment and torture, Max Wright is scarred both inside and out. His only driving force is to protect himself and his fellow prisoners from further harm. When a beautiful angel appears in his cell, he’s inexplicably drawn to her, and desire burns between them. Yet, he fears that succumbing to his passion will only lead to ruin.

But rebellion is brewing among the angels, and shocking betrayals have dire consequences. Can Max and Ana protect their hearts and their eternal love?

Our Review:
Well written and compelling, this story of angels and warriors and angel-warriors will have you in its grip from the first page. Stark, gritty, and sometimes tragic, Ms. Persell also weaves hope, love, and a whole lotta sexy into her tale.
Anahita, an angel with goals and aspirations, meets a warrior, Max, a human prisoner of war, who is damaged, but not broken, never broken. Together, they struggle against their very natures and the laws and rules that govern their lives. The outcome? Perfection.
I have had the great privilege of reading all of the books in this series, and they never disappoint. Ms. Persell makes each story different, fresh, and always leaves us cheering. And, as with the others, she leaves a grain, a hint, as to what may be next in line, or who, and we are excited to read the next.
Very well done.

Our Review:

Yummy? Oh, yes indeed. Becky Holmes will do whatever it takes to protect her baby – too bad she doesn’t have two nickels to rub together. She is in a world of hurt, and with an evil ex storming back into her life, “worse to come” is all she can see on her horizon.

And Becky may be forced to give up custody of her child, unless she can prove she is providing a steady, safe home for the child.
Thankfully, both have good-hearted meddlers for friends.
The story is wonderfully written, and the baby might actually steal the show. Tender, funny, endearing, and at times teeth-grinding, Her Temporary Hero will satisfy that itch for the perfect summertime read.

Very Well Done.

4Heart Book Review: Tender Deceit by H.Y. Hanna

Tender Deceit
First Love Series
Book 1
H.Y. Hanna

Genre:  Romantic Suspense
Cover Artist:  Kim Killion

Book Description:
First love. Second chance. All they have to do is stay alive…

Following her father's mysterious death in Singapore, Leah leaves her life in London and returns to the island that was her childhood home - braced to confront her past. Toran James may have been the boy her fourteen-year-old heart yearned for, but the magic of stolen glances and first kisses faded with his betrayal.
The enigmatic man she meets upon her return, though, is nothing like her memory, and the past holds more secrets than she realized. Was her father's death really an accident? What was hidden in his study? And why has Toran contacted her again after all these years? Someone is out to silence Leah - and that someone might be the man she is rapidly falling in love with... again.

Our Review~

I enjoyed Tender Deceit – to the point where I forgot it was the first book in a series. Arrgh, I wanted to know more, more, more at the end. Patience was never a prominent aspect of my personality. Sigh.
Forced to leave Singapore by her father, our heroine, Leah, was shunted off to a boarding school in England at the age of fourteen, when she refused to stop seeing her first love, Toran. Why such a drastic measure, you ask? IDK. Toran was a nice young man, smart, polite, gorgeous as the day is long….oh, maybe that’s why Daddy intervened. Even so, seems excessive. Regardless, Leah has made a life for herself in London, but she’s forced to return to her childhood home on receiving news of her father’s death – a death that may have a suspicious cause. Once back in country, it doesn’t take long to Leah to see Toran again, but what are the chances something between them may be rekindled? Before they can seriously consider the question, they find themselves in the line of fire of a very important, very ruthless man.
The writing is strong, the characters well-drawn and likable. It was a pleasure to read this book, and I look forward to the next in the series.
Well done.

Amazon

Our Review:

SHH certainly does not have the pace of a barn-burner, but its gentle ride-along and lovely writing make for a good read. Macy Stoddard is called to a new job in a location I never knew existed – Thousand Islands, NY, on the St. Lawrence River – to be a personal rehab nurse for an elderly woman. Very early on, Macy must face the realization she is not wanted there by almost every household member, other than the lady who owns the house and is her charge. Nevertheless, Macy perseveres, even as events unfold that none in the household could have foreseen.
At times the story takes on the flavor of a tourist guide as we visit islands, villages, and learn (perhaps a bit much of) the local history, but otherwise, the story is charming and worthy of a few quiet hours of reading enjoyment.

Well Done.
Cary Morgan Frates

About the Author:

Amy M. Reade is a debut author of romantic suspense.  A native of upstate New York, she grew up in the Thousand Islands region and was inspired by the natural beauty of that area to write her first novel, Secrets of Hallstead House.  She now lives in New Jersey with her husband, three children, a Bouvier des Flandres named Orly, and two rescued cats who refuse to answer to their names of Porthos and Athos.

Upon graduation from Cornell University and Indiana University School of Law, Amy practiced law in New York City, but soon discovered that her dream job was writing.  In addition to volunteering with school, church, and community groups, Amy is currently working on her second novel, set in the area around Charleston, South Carolina.

Though Amy lives within sight of the Atlantic Ocean, she is partial to the blue waters of the Pacific and spends as much time as possible on the Big Island of Hawaii, which is the setting of her as-yet-unwritten third novel.

Amazon

Our Review:

This one hits all the right notes – (very) hunky guy, damsel in distress, fast and faithful fiends, and bad bad men who need their comeuppance.
Escaping from a world of hurt, heroine Emily is fleeing for her life, and who should she run into but the most gorgeous guy in six states (okay, that’s my opinion), Adam.
In Connecting Strangers (book one of the Discovering Emily series), Rachel Carrington takes us on a spirited, well-written ride through rural Kentucky, and then leaves us with a wonderful “good enough for now” ending, with its very toes on the precipice of a cliffhanger.
Well done.

About the Author:

I started writing years ago, and my first attempt was a contemporary romance that will never see the light of day. I think I may even have thrown it away by now. It was absolutely horrific as I knew nothing about well…anything to do with writing.
After that, I started writing fantasy romances about wizards and wizards, and once those took off, I segued to paranormal romances (hello, vampires and ghosts) and romantic suspense.

I also write articles for various magazines, including The Writer’s Journal, Writer’s Magazine, Writer’s Weekly, Writing for Dollars, Absolute Write, Freelance Writing.com, and Funds for Writers.

I’m fortunate to make my home in historical Charleston, South Carolina. Beautiful city. Beautiful people. When I’m not writing, I love to read, watch Bones, Castle, Blue Bloods, and Hawaii Five-O, create videos, keep Target in business, play visitor in my city, and drink lots of coffee.

Genre: Paranormal/Romantic Suspense/Contemporary
Publisher: Boroughs Publishing Group
Date of Publication: April 9th 2014

Book Description:
Haunted. Haunting. Redeemed.

When Lisa Harbinger takes a job as nanny to a prestigious Australian family, she gets more than she bargained for: two spoilt children, vengeful ghosts, a long-unsolved mystery and a blazing passion she and her enigmatic boss are unable to deny.

ARe Amazon Smashwords

Our Review:

This story is delightful…and mysterious…and a wonderful Australian vacation in book form. I learned so many Aussy-isms! When Lisa loses her husband to another man, she is forced to regroup, reassess, and rebuild her life. Money is short and good jobs seem to be non-existent, so she takes a temporary job as a live-in nanny. She finds herself in the middle of a sad and dysfunctional family, and, being sensitive to ghosts, she can’t help but wonder who is haunting handsome Mr. Prescott’s ancient manor home. Well, wouldn’t you wonder, too? Lives are changed, both past and present, and in the end, the changes are all good, very good.
Well done.
