Some of you readers may have read about my very first crack at Fiction Novel, The Adventures of Jewel Cardwell: Hydra’s Nest. I an so grateful for all of the support I have garnered through the years This week, as the holiday season kicks up in full gear all over the world and as I journey on with the virtual publicity tour for my newly released Romantic Suspense/Thriller Book, Of Sentimental Value; I can’t help but reminisce over my experiences celebrating holidays in Africa.  These great adventures found in both my fiction books, The Adventures of Jewel Cardwell and Of Sentimental Value beautifully brought back to my memory the wonderful times I’d shared with friends and family members, growing up in Africa. Armed with the desire to share this piece of me with my readers, I garnered up the courage, the enthusiasm and the commitment needed to tell the world how Africa can also be a beautiful place, even in its throes of poverty and difficulties.

As I share my humble and sincere heart with my readers, I continue to envision a world free of challenges, drama as we would often call them and desire a peaceful place where everyone can live in peace and harmony. I yearn for a place where children can move freely, live freely, eat freely and of course, never go hungry. It is my hope and desire that as I share my experiences with you; you will be moved to be a difference maker… reach out and touch someone in the most unusual and / or unexpected way.

To this effect, let me quickly share with you where my passion for writing these fiction books emanated from…

My name is Fumi “Stephanie” Hancock.  I was born in Africa but have lived in the United States of America for over 30 years. A little over eight years ago, my father, Prince T.A Ogunleye called me up and told me it was time to return home. I’d literally grown up in the US and this was now home to me. My father felt it was time to give back to Africa.

This was an important trip for me as I’d not been back to my community in over 23 years!  The trip was equally important because one of my cousins, His Royal Majesty, King Emmanuel Adebayo, reigning King of Emure Ekiti Kingdom, a place tugged away in the Western region of Africa was being crowned and my father felt it was a great opportunity to reconnect with my roots.

The journey was exhilarating yet filled with anxiety as I did not know what I was going to encounter.  I trusted my father, packed my bags and went back to West Africa with my family. It was the most incredible journey of my life… to witness a King’s coronation… no words could describe the feelings.

What was more important was the surprise which awaited me when I arrived in the community with my Tennessean friends! The community people rallied around me and reminded me of who I was… their princess who had been gone for long and was now back! I took the time to revisit my childhood boarding school and low and behold, all of my experiences at the school came rushing back.

With all of this jubilation came social responsibility… to come back to the United States, let the world know of this region in Africa and help to make a difference in whatever little way I could.

The King and his cabinet had a huge task on their hands and they knew it would require reaching out to all for assistance. It is amazing how when we reach out to give someone something that we may be lacking ourselves, how it turns around and blesses us back a thousand fold.  Because of my children in Africa, my life and that of my volunteers have forever changed.

We came back home, reached out to whoever would listen to our stories and began plugging away at the needs in Africa.  We hosted the King and some of his 63 cabinet members to a gala in Tennessee.

To date, we currently sponsor 40 children who would ordinarily not have been able to attend school. We opened the very first state of the art library in that region ever.

With the help of some Song writers & artists in Tennessee,
Friend to an Angel a song honoring our African children was debuted and used in raising funds for our programs in Africa.  (Available at: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/theadassafoundationproje)

Today, I celebrate all of my
African angels with the characters my readers will encounter in the Adventures of Jewel Cardwell: Hydra’s Nest and Of Sentimental Value. These vibrant and most times feisty characters are a culmination of my childhood friends as well as “those conjured in my head.” These characters as well as my African babies have consistently plagued my dream and haunted my mind into bringing them alive.

Every other year I would return to Africa serving the children in these communities through my non-profit organization the
Adassa Foundation, I am reminded of the colorful ambiance and the need to share this part of the world with book lovers.

There is more work that to be done. I am constantly in need of assistance to help move our programs forward.  Our next vision for this region is to build a Youth Center for Excellence where children can converge and learn rather than be in the streets roaming aimlessly. As we celebrate our holidays here in the US and all over the world, I urge you to consider joining me in putting a smile on yet another African angel’s face at
www.adassafoundation.org or support by picking up the song: Friend to an Angel.

“Somewhere between romance, suspense, mystery and fantasy lies the cultural and nuanced Of Sentimental Value, which despite all this insight remains fun and entertaining. A bit whimsical, Hancock's style is not at all snobby but reveals her writing savvy through phrases like "tugging away at my gelatin heart". Sam~Amazon

“I enjoyed the story of Jewel, it was fresh and in a setting that was new to me. The descriptions made me feel as if I was there. I experienced the place right along with our Jewel.  Every page was beautifully written and I was engrossed from start to finish
.” Review by Sara Bree High, Goodreads.com (The Adventures of Jewel Cardwell).

Well, mission accomplished Sara. I wanted my readers to be transported to a place where they’d never been before. I wanted them to see how other people live in other parts of the world as well as live here in the US…. Their struggles to fit in and live their passion… I wanted them to also see how people like them, who have travelled to live in Africa… how they adjust to the culture and setting.  The characters though reside in Africa come from various parts of the world especially Europe.

Portions of the proceeds made this holiday season will be funding scholarships and the Proposed Youth Center.

“Of Sentimental Value” does a super job demonstrating the worth of every individual who lives on this planet. The film is unique in that it opens with actors in the movie sharing painful moments of their past, including abuse and health issues, and how they moved forward to find their “worth” as people of value. One actress tells of her manic depression and suicidal thoughts, but how she pushed through after hearing the voice of God speaking to her spirit, telling her she had a purpose and a reason to live. The themes of perseverance and faith are to be commended. We are awarding our Dove Family-Approved Seal for ages twelve plus to “Of Sentimental Value.” This film has many inspiring moments!”

Guest Post: Deadly, Calm and Cold by Susannah Sandlin

Deadly, Calm and Cold
The Collectors
Book 2
Susannah Sandlin

Genre: Romantic Suspense
Publisher: Montlake Romance
Date of Publication: December 2, 2014
Number of pages: 280
Cover Artist: Kerrie Robertson

Book Description:

From award-winning author Susannah Sandlin comes the second book in The Collectors series.

How far will ordinary people go to protect their secrets? The Collectors’ games are as much about manipulating lives as finding lost treasure. Everyone is expendable as the ruthless C7 pushes people into gambling with their lives in order to find priceless objects lost to history.

Samantha Crowe's secrets could ruin her career, while Brody Parker's could get him killed. They become pawns for two Collectors seeking Bad King John's crown jewels, which disappeared in rural England back when Robin Hood roamed Nottingham.

This time, however, the Collectors--a ruthless dotcom billionaire and a desperate London detective--might not be playing for the same team, leaving Sam and Brody trapped in the middle.

One thing's for sure: If either hope to survive, Sam and Brody will have to find a way to overcome their distrust--and their growing attraction--in order to succeed on this winner-take-all treasure hunt.

Amazon | BN  | Book Depository

Excerpt:
Samantha hadn’t intended to watch Brody Parker take a shower, only to peek in the window to see if he was in the bathroom so he could let her in the house.
But damn, that man was sexy. He was facing her, his head thrown back and eyes closed as the water cascaded over every ridge and muscle and . . . everything. She had to look, right? She might have taken a vow of celibacy but she hadn’t taken a vow of blindness.
You’re an absolutely pathetic loser, Sam’s inner nag said, and she agreed. Anyone who’d stand in the middle of a monsoon and ogle a man in his shower should have LOSER stamped on her forehead.
As soon as Brody stepped out of the water and saw her, his mouth and eyes battling for which could open the widest in shock, she stepped away from the window and splashed her way around the corner, returning to the back door. And yeah, giggled a little, the laughter bubbling up and spilling out before she could get it under control. She hadn’t laughed much in the last couple of days.
She’d never been quite so wet and cold in her life. The wind had picked up, stabbing horizontal blades of rain into her face as she waited at the back door. For a few seconds, she wondered if he might leave her out here, but then the door opened and he stood there with a white towel slung loosely around his hips, which would have been sexy as hell except for the black T-shirt he’d pulled on. Droplets of water dripped from his black wavy hair onto his shoulders, getting said T-shirt wet.
“Nice fashion statement.” She gave him her best lopsided smile as he moved aside to let her in. “You’re shy about going without a shirt? You have man boobs, don’t you?” Which would be a crime against nature.
“I certainly do not.” Looking offended, Brody pulled the T-shirt up, exposing a rock-hard set of damp abs and nice, firm pecs without a trace of man boob. He jerked the shirt back down before she started salivating, which was good, given her celibacy and all.
“Why were you leering in my bathroom window?” He cocked his head. “Are you stalking me? How long had you been watching?”
Not nearly long enough. “Just a few seconds. I knocked on the door earlier and you didn’t answer.”
He glanced out the door, where the rain almost obscured the garage. “Where’s your car?”
“Ah, that’s the real story. Do you have a fire lit?”
Brody closed the door, shutting out the hiss of rain hitting the slate courtyard. “Not yet. I was going to do it as soon as I showered. Give me a minute to get dressed.” He made no attempt to leave, though, but instead treated her to a head-to-toe visual inspection that she could swear grew a little heated when his gaze landed on where her soaked, thin sweater clung to her breasts.
Her nipples perked up just to make sure he could see them, the traitors. They didn’t want her to be celibate. They wanted to be touched and licked and nibbled on, even if the attention came at the lips and tongue and teeth of the man who’d deliberately punctured her tire.

MRP would like to extend a very warm welcome to Susannah Sandlin, author of Deadly, Calm and Cold.

Welcome to Swineshead?

It’s always dicey when an author ventures beyond her own world and into another. But the plot of my newest book, DEADLY, CALM, AND COLD, involves a search for the British crown jewels lost by “bad” King John back in the early thirteenth century, which meant I had to take my characters outside the confines of the southeastern U.S. unless I wanted to put King John in a time-travel story. Not.

No, if my hero and heroine, Brody and Samantha, were going to search for treasure—even under duress—they had to do it somewhere in the part of England known as the East Midlands. Specifically, they needed to be somewhere in Lincolnshire.

Since historians generally agree that the crown jewels were lost in quicksand in an area that has since become solid ground, I needed to find a plausible other place for the jewels to be found. Plausible enough for my somewhat nerdy grad student Samantha to be able to develop her own theory about where they were.

I finally settled on a small village of 2,500 or so people. Swineshead isn’t a sexy name, although the town looks charming in the research I was able to do on it. There’s a high street. There were some properties for sale in the area—including this charming seventeenth-century ivy-covered cottage—that I could “buy” for my characters. It’s in the middle of a rural area just to the west of Nottingham and Sherwood Forest, and of course King John was the bad old king that Robin Hood so despised. So it was perfect.

In 1216, when King John lost his crown jewels on the same day he spent an evening at Swineshead, there was a large Cistercian abbey located outside the village. At the time, Swineshead was near enough to the North Sea that at high tide during the rainy season, the water would rise up to the doors of the high street shops. These days, the town is quite far inland.

Unfortunately, the old abbey was torn down and its parts used to build other structures in the area, so there were no ruins for Brody and Samantha to explore. The site of the abbey is now private property, and I didn’t think it was very practical for them to be digging up someone’s lawn, so I had to expand my research to some of the countryside around Swineshead.

Turns out, it’s an interesting area whose county seat, Lincoln, dates back to the first century. The Romans came to town. The Vikings traded here. These days, there are a lot of sheep.

Also nearby is the port town of Boston. There was a famous American city named after its much older English counterpart when it was settled by emigrants from Boston, Lincolnshire. It’s in Massachusetts; you’ve probably heard of it! (Who knew? Not me!)

So welcome to the town of Swineshead, England. There’s no real Grainery restaurant and inn, but there’s a terrific-sounding place called The Wheatsheaf that I swear I will get to one of these days!

Thank you so much for joining us today, Susannah. We really enjoyed the visit. Good luck and great sales with Deadly, Calm and Cold

When Kisses Taste Like Scottish Shortbread

Scottish Shortbread cookies are tasty, rich, and easy to make. Whenever I attend a Scottish Highland games or festival, I search for these yummy hunks of flour, butter, and sugar mixed with vanilla, almond flavoring, or maple syrup. Shortbread has a long history as an easy sweet made with easy-to-find ingredients, and cooks have baked them since the twelfth-century.

Even hundreds of years later, not much has changed, nor have the Highlands of Scotland. For quite some time only wealthy people such as Mary, Queen of Scots, could afford to make shortbread, and others baked it only at Christmas, Hogmanay (New Years), weddings, and other special occasions.

With a crumbly texture, for years shortbread was baked at a low temperature, such as beside a banked peat fire in a crofter’s hut or behind the stables in a beehive oven. Cooked in various shapes, such as a pizza cut into wedges, you can also find it in bricks and rounds. It molds easily, and tastes great. When I bake them, I add chocolate-chips.

This classic Scottish dessert has gone through several changes throughout history, but the basic flavor is different from any other cookie I have ever tasted. In my latest release, My Dark Highlander, I mention the treat several times along with my characters because my story takes place at modern-day Highland games and a festival back in 1603 Scotland.

Here is an excerpt from My Dark Highlander

“Trust me, laird.”
“I hope I doono’ come to regret this.”
When the brownie’s warm fingers closed around Gavin’s hand, now free of blood, the air shimmered. A shiver coursed through him, and his body grew light as air. Intense illumination made his eyes clamp shut. His skin crawled, because the sensations were oddly familiar.
“Here we are, my laird. Open yer eyes, and go find yer woman.” Jaden-Tog pointed to an army of large tents holding court beside a huge three-story edifice. Thunderous applause filled the air at intervals, and the sounds, roars, and smells stirred his recollection of a recent event, back in Scotland. The aroma of roasted meat and fresh-baked Scottish shortbread tempered the odor of cow and sheep dung. “A Highland festival?”
Jaden-Tog chuckled, and released Gavin’s hand. “Aye, the 21st century version. ‘Tis no’ much different. However, I believe she headed that way. See?”
Gavin’s gaze followed the direction of the brownie’s finger, which pointed away from the crowds and tents. Taking a chance, he strode along the gravel trail, toward the odd metal carriages that he had noticed near Jenny’s home, while the brownie kept pace.
Had only a fortnight passed since he last traveled to this time in search of his betrothed? As he increased his pace, an object on the ground, in the middle of a trail ahead, caught his attention.
“A doeskin slipper!”
“Aye, ‘tis the footwear yer Jenny was wearing. Can ye no’ sense her, laird?”
Gavin glared at the little man, then closed his eyes. Using his sorcery-aided senses, he searched for the truth. He was too new at magic to sense her, but Jenny’s fragrance invaded his nose, proving she had passed by this way.
On the distant edge of the lot, and farther along the trail, a low hillock muted the sounds of rushing water, beyond. “Is that the same water I fell in?”
“Nay, my laird. ‘Tis a large river, and--”

“A scream! ‘Twas a woman’s cry for help, I swear it.” He felt in his heart, that the voice belonged to Jenny.

Thank you so much for joining us today, Nancy. We really enjoyed the visit. Good luck and great sales with My Dark Highlander

Excerpts: Elven Obsession by Decadent Kane

Elven Obsession
Trouble with Elves Series
Decadent Kane

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Publisher: Breathless Press
Cover Artist: Fiona Jayde

Series Description:
Something elven this way comes...
5 books from the Trouble with Elves series by Decadent Kane

Book 1~ Ribbon of Darkness

An old family secret draws Ribbon into an Elven world while Draven is forced to find a way to drag her back home to save Christmas magic.

Excerpt ~ Draven turned her around in his arms. “I’d suggest you watch yourself if you wish to keep your clothes while we walk the next few miles to the Pole. I have absolutely no qualms about taking you right here, snow and all.” Draven leaned in close to her face.
His lips hovered over hers, causing Ribbon to bite her lip just so she didn’t close the small distance between them. “Trust me, Donella, when I tell you the cold will be the last thing on your pretty
little mind.” His eyes slid half-closed.

Book 2~ Tempting Clover

Breaking a goblin's curse is more difficult than Clover thought. Especially when love and nightshade are crucial ingredients.

Excerpt ~ "You're already wet. I could claim you. Didn't you say you wanted to have an orgasm, that it was torture?" Malik's words came out low and sinister. Clover suddenly regretted ever wanting an orgasm, or at least telling him so.
She held her breath. Oh God. He's going to take me. Clover fought harder and he let her break away. His laughter filled the air between them. Her chest heaved with fear, her breath coming in hard gasps.
"However, it wouldn't satisfy me little morsel. You could never please me properly." He walked past her laughing as he went to his lab to make more human potions.

Book 3~ Steele Your Soul

Stolen souls, an evil drow elf, a dark eyed beauty named Pepper, and a king who doesn't take kindly to the loss of his goods...Captain Joren Steele has his hands full.
Excerpt ~ He coaxed her lips apart for the briefest of moments before her hand came up and landed a stinging blow to his cheek. Amused, Joren laughed, a full belly laugh. The kind of thing he hadn't done in ages. The lass was a feisty one; he'd give her credit. And oh so pretty when angered. Her cheeks had flushed a dark shade of pink, and her brown eyes darted all over the ship, anywhere but on his. He rubbed his cheek. She had a solid swing. He licked his lips to savor the sweet taste of her mouth.
"How dare you!"
"How dare I? Oh, elfess, I dare all the damn time. I'm a pirate." He wanted to scoop her up and haul her off to his bed. But he wasn't the kind of elf who took advantage in such a way—no, she'd come to him instead. He might even play hard to get. But she would come.

Book 4~ A Hint of Cayenne

Two bounty hunting elves must put aside their attraction to each other when a malevolent fairy comes up for grabs. Cayenne and Hawthorne both need the twenty gold reward, but only one can walk away with it.
Excerpt ~ Hawthorn stood before her. Dark hooded eyes, broad shoulders filling up the space, and every bit the male she had seen a few hours ago. A jar of honey in his hand.
"What are you...how could––"
"I find you?" His voice rolled out calm and deep, slipping over her and moistening her panties.
"Yes. Find me." She swallowed. She looked at the jar of honey and back to him. His gaze bore into hers, and she averted her eyes opening the door. "Come in."
He walked over the threshold, his boots thumping softly on the floor. "I have a knack for finding the things I'm after." He grinned.
Cocky bastard. She shut the door and crossed her arms. "And what are you doing here?" Inside, butterflies tossed in her stomach. She wanted him to say he'd come for her but, at the same time, was terrified at the thought of hearing him say it. Her mind jumped from one side to the other. Her hands fisted shirt where he couldn't see.
"I told you I'd find you." He took one long stride toward her. "We left things a little..." He took another step, and she backed up until she hit the wall. "Steamy." His voice dropped so low she barely heard the last word. Her heart hammered at her ribcage.
"What...ah." She cleared her throat. "What do you want?"
Thorn put his free hand on the wall beside her, and she melted into him. How had he gotten so elfing good at teasing her? "I want you of course," he said, his lips barely above hers.

Book 5~ A Whisper of Rue
When a package magically shows up in Rue's home, she'll have two choices. Either do as Gage demands, or standby as an elf is tortured.
Excerpt ~ "Rue, you can call me every name in your pretty little head but it won't change anything. Afraid you're stuck with me, and your decisions will affect everything. But you're stubborn and you won't see things my way instantly. You'll need proof. I understand. But don't say I didn't warn you," he stated.
Proof of what? He was playing games with her and she wasn't in the elfing mood. He had no right to come in her home. No right to make demands on her. No right to invade every inch of her privacy. She wanted the earpiece out. Why'd she have to get all curious and put the stupid thing in to begin with? Her mother always said her curiosity would lead her to trouble one day and Rue had the dreadful sense that today was that day. "I don't know why you chose me to do whatever it is you need. Probably something horrible. But quit fucking around and remove the spell."
"You want it removed?"
"Yes." She hissed the word. Her anger bubbled inside threatening to tear her apart, mainly because she couldn't see the man attempting to control her.
"Then come and find me."

Today, MRP has a guest post from Stephan Martino, author of The New Reality. Enjoy!

I believe everyone has at least one good book in them, no matter what their education or background. Whether it’s about your life, an interesting event or it’s just made up, the story is there. The real question is if there is that real inner drive to simply write the story.

It’s this inner passion that makes a true author. I may make it sound too easy (and it’s certainly not), but after studying science and medicine all my life, I did not predict that one day I would become a fiction writer.

However, I knew that that I found that one good story in me after I saw how gene therapy unfortunately either killed or caused serious illness in children who had the procedure. The event spurred on my inquisitive nature. I always learned that the virus used to transmit the good gene in gene therapy was deactivated and could do no harm. However, the virus, in the end, directly caused some of the children to die or become seriously ill. I also learned that the insertion of the good gene would be safe. However, that again was not the entire truth, and the procedure caused leukemia in some instances.

Then came my biggest question I posed to the researchers. I asked them since the virus that instigated the problems basically was the same one that caused the common cold, could this virus spread and produce a serious health risk. I was assured the answer was no, but then again, I was assured about the other previously mentioned “facts” about gene therapy.

I took this exactly scenario and used it as the basis for my medical/political thriller, The New Reality. However, I wanted to go one step further and asked if we would we be prepared for such a pandemic, especially with our declining medical system and increasing national debt. Also, with less grant money for funding research and the emergence of new diseases such as the MERS or CHIKV viruses, the possibility for a viral pandemic seemed to be a real and potential threat.

And it is this virus pandemic that sets the stage for The New Reality. However, the only way for the main characters to find a cure for this virus is to travel the world in order to decipher an ancient riddle locked within the bible before time runs out. Though the novel is fictional, the code described within is based on actual mathematical fact that has been peer reviewed, proven by the Pentagon and written in leading journals. With a race against time and with others trying to stop them at all costs, The New Reality is a face paced thriller that will keep you thinking long after you finish reading it.

Thank you so much for joining us today, Stephan. We really enjoyed the visit. Good luck and great sales with The New Reality.
