Excerpt:

In my state of distraction, I hadn’t noticed how far into the prison we’d walked. I passed the other tour group on my way out, trying really hard not to advise a few people to check over their shoulders, and when I reached the yard, I stopped dead. A wide space of black grass, darkened by the absence of the orange lights and by the high cream wall, stared back at me, empty and oddly quiet. Usually, there were other groups lingering after their tours, but tonight … no one. Nothing. Not even flashes of torchlight showing the whereabouts of the rent-a-cops.
A cold shiver passed over me, pushing the summer heat away from the thick walls behind me.
I put my head down and brought my shoulders up, making myself as small as possible, casting my eyes to the glowing streetlight outside the prison gates. A hundred paces across the yard, that’s all that stood between me and freedom. A hundred paces through almost pitch darkness. A hundred paces past four ghosts that just made themselves visible to me, knowing I could see them.
They all looked up as I stepped out onto the grass, their eyes falling on the tight fist of fear in my chest. My heart raced as each step drew me closer, and I tried to remind myself that they had no physical power. They couldn't actually hurt me. I hoped.
Tales of horror, of the tortures and other atrocities that led these murderers to prison, filled my head as I walked between them. I could feel the hairs stick up on the back of my neck as another one came up behind me. I wasn’t sure who it was, but his energy felt dark and menacing. Every cell in my body screamed at me to turn around and just take one look. But if I did, or if I ran, they’d know I was afraid and they’d feed on that—they’d follow me, most likely outside the prison walls and to my car. If I let them think they had no power over me, they might let me be once I reached the gates.
My breath hitched and my stride shortened as I quickened my pace. I hugged my chest, holding tight to the keys, but as I my heart leaped forward, just six steps away from the gates, my hand went loose for no reason and the keys dropped to the ground. The clunk didn't register until I stepped outside the prison walls and as I spun around to look back at the shiny metal cluster—a few steps away into the pitch blackness I’d just walked through—the spirits closed in, standing shoulder to shoulder. No faces now. No form. Just wavering pulses of light. They hovered there just in front of the keys as if challenging me to cross the threshold back into the prison.

MRP would like to extend a very warm welcome to our guest blogger, Sandra Bunino, author of The Colors of Us.

The time dedicated to researching a book is almost as important as the time spent writing the story. Whenever possible, I try to experience first hand what my characters do, even if it takes me out of my comfort zone or is a little bit painful (case in point: Brazilian - ouch).

I’m not an exercise girl. In fact, I really dislike sweating, sneakers and sports bras. However, I braved all three in the name of research for my new release, Colors of Us. The hero and heroine of Colors of Us spend time together in the gym as Hunter teaches Michelle to kickbox. I not only wanted to learn the technical aspects of kickboxing (stance, kicks and punches) but I also had to know what it felt like inside, emotionally and physically. So I signed up for three months of kickboxing at a local gym.

After the first session my only thought was: I just wasted my money because I am never going back. Not only did I sweat to the point it dripped from my hairline and into my eyes (not Brazilian wax ouch, but still, ouch), I had to fight very hard not to lost my lunch right there next to a bunch of veteran kickboxers (embarrassing).  Muscles I never even knew existed screamed in protest and I felt like as uncoordinated as Elaine in The Elaine Dance Seinfeld episode.

Kickboxing was not for me… No way, no how….until something happened inside. Doubts and insecurities egged me on for a match and I wasn’t about to walk away. I owed it to the heroine, Michelle, to go back. So I did…and then I went back again. Soon a new strength, confidence and empowerment coursed through my veins… and it felt flippin’ fantastic. Unfortunately, I became a little too enthusiastic with my newly found badassness and blew out my knee (Brazilian wax ouch), but not before my research was complete. BTW, that feeling achieved during my kickboxing stint never left me.

Just this week I heard about Under Armour’s multi-million dollar deal to seal model Gisele Bundchen as their spokesperson. The first commercial in their new “I Will What I Want” campaign features Giselle alone in a stark room with a single heavy bag. As she punches and kicks the heck out of it, Tweets appear on the walls around her. Condescending messages such as: Is modeling now a sport; Stick to modeling sweetie; She’s nothing special at all; Giselle is soooo fake; too old; and way too skinny appear on the wall as Giselle ignores the messages and focuses on the bag. Here’s a link to the ad if you’re interested in viewing it:

Kudos to Under Armour for thinking outside the box. The campaign can mean so many things but for me it’s about finding your own inner strength, confidence and empowerment. No one can give those traits to you or even take them away. No, inner strength, confidence and empowerment build, nurture and grow from within. If you like to read romance about fighting inner demons and coming out on top, check out Colors of Us. Oh, did I mention the hero, Hunter, is sexy as sin?

Thanks for having me as a guest today, More Romance Please. xoxo

Thank you so much for stopping by, Sandra!

MRP would like to extend a very warm welcome to Sarah Daltry, author of Bitter Fruits. Sarah, to begin, can you tell us who or what most influenced you to become a writer?
I can’t say anything really did because I have always written. Stories are part of who I am and I just naturally told them as soon as I could.

If you were to be left alone on an island, what three books would you take with you?
The Sun Also Rises, Days of Blood and Starlight, and 13 Little Blue Envelopes.

What are your most and least favorite movie genres?
Favorite is horror. Least favorite is romance.

If you could choose any man for your next book cover, who would he be?
Christian Bale.

When you are on a deadline, what aspect of your ‘regular’ life suffers most?
Cleaning.

What advice would you give aspiring authors?
Honestly? Don’t do it. I love writing, but I sincerely regret ever publishing.

What advice would you give seasoned writers?
All success and failure is based on readers, on real people, and on the way you treat others.

When reading for pleasure, do you prefer a physical or electronic book?
Physical.

From the first stroke of a pen (or laptop), how long did it take you get published?
This is my first novel so it took me a couple months to write it and it was accepted a few days after I self-published it.

Did you ever feel like calling it quits?
Yes. All the time. I have quit and a couple of readers refused to let me so now I mostly avoid interacting with anyone and let them handle all my media stuff. If you are curious to why, go ahead and Google me. Everyone else thinks they know everything there is to know about me and feels entitled to speak for me. Now, I have nothing left to say about it.

What did you do when you got your first contract?

Waited for my husband to wake up and told him.

Thank you so much for joining us today, Sarah. We really enjoyed the visit. Good luck and great sales with Bitter Fruits.
